Products Description

API 5L GR. B PSL1 is a grade of carbon steel pipe defined by the American Petroleum Institute (API) specification API 5L. This standard for "Line Pipe," which is used specifically for transporting oil, gas, and water in the petroleum and natural gas industries.

PSL1 (Product Specification Level 1): This defines the quality level of the pipe. PSL1 is the "standard" quality level for routine service conditions. It has less stringent requirements compared to PSL2.

Chemical Composition
The maximum percentages of key elements are controlled to ensure weldability and performance

Element

Composition (% max)

Notes

Carbon (C)

0.26-0.28 percent

Some sources state 0.26% max, others 0.28% max; this can vary slightly by mill/manufacturing standard.

Manganese (Mn)

1.20 percent

Phosphorus (P)

0.03 percent

Sulfur (S)

0.03 percent

Others

Copper (Cu), Nickel (Ni), Chromium (Cr) max 0.50%; Molybdenum (Mo) max 0.15%

Key Characteristics of PSL1

what PSL1 means in practical terms:

-No Impact Testing:Unlike PSL2, PSL1 does not require mandatory Charpy V-Notch (CVN) impact testing. This means the steel's toughness at low temperatures is not certified by the standard.

-No Maximum Limits: PSL1 specifies only a minimum yield and tensile strength. PSL2 imposes both minimum and maximum limits to prevent the steel from being too hard or brittle.

-Non-Destructive Examination (NDE): PSL1 does not mandate NDE of the pipe body (like ultrasonic inspection), whereas it is a requirement for PSL2

Common Applications

This product is a staple for midstream oil and gas infrastructure. You can position it to clients for the following uses:

Transportation Pipelines:Gathering lines and transmission lines for crude oil, natural gas, and water.

General Service:Suitable for conveying other liquids and gaseous media at standard pressures and temperatures.

Refinery Piping:Used in industrial plants for utility and process lines where extreme low-temperature service is not required.

Selling Points: Why a Customer Buys This

Cost-Effective:Because PSL1 has fewer testing requirements (no impact tests, no mandatory NDE) than PSL2, it is generally more economical. It is the go-to choice for projects where operating conditions are not severe.

Reliability of Seamless:The absence of a weld seam eliminates the weakest point in a pipe, making it safer for high-pressure fluids compared to ERW (Electric Resistance Welded) pipes.

Versatility:Grade B has excellent weldability, making it easy for contractors to install and fabricate on-site.
