Features and Selection Guidance

TP304 (S30400):‌ Composed primarily of chromium (18-20%) and nickel (8-10%), with a typical carbon content of ≤0.08%. It offers excellent general corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties, and ease of fabrication.

TP304L (S30403):‌ Shares similar chromium and nickel content but has a lower maximum carbon content (≤0.03%). This reduction in carbon minimizes the formation of chromium carbides during welding, thereby preserving corrosion resistance in the weld area without post-weld heat treatment. Its Chinese grade equivalent is 00Cr19Ni10

Choosing between TP304 and TP304L depends on the specific application:

TP304‌ is suitable for most general applications not involving significant welding or exposure to conditions that cause sensitization (450°C - 850°C).

TP304L‌ is the preferred choice for applications involving extensive welding or operating in environments where intergranular corrosion is a concern, such as certain chemical processing conditions. It ensures the weld zone retains corrosion resistance comparable to the base metal
