PSL 1: Defines standard quality requirements for general use.
PSL 2: Imposes more rigorous requirements on chemical composition, mechanical properties, toughness testing (like Charpy V-Notch impact tests), non-destructive examination (NDE), and traceability. PSL 2 pipes are mandatory for more severe service conditions, such as high-pressure, low-temperature, or sour (H₂S-containing) environments.
For PSL 2 pipes, suffixes are added to the grade to denote the delivery condition or special properties:
X52N: Normalized or normalized-rolled.
X52Q: Quenched and tempered.
X52M: Thermomechanically rolled (TMCP).
